Foster City Celebrates Year of the Dragon

To celebrate the Chinese New Year, Lunar Year 4968, the Foster City Arts and Culture Committee invite the public to attend an afternoon of entertainment and tea dancing.  The festivities will be held at the Recreation Center at Leo J. Ryan Park, 650 Shell Boulevard, Foster City on Sunday, February 27, 2000.  The time is 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The program will begin with a welcome by Deborah Wilder, Mayor, followed by a lion dance, performed by a 15-person dance troupe of the Tim Wong Chinese Martial Art Studio, to welcome the Year of the Dragon. Then there will be Cha-Cha lessons and dancing music by Bill Dea of BDProductions.  The finale of the afternoon will be a Chinese Tango demonstration.

Dancing is a performing art and can also be a powerful way to express culture.  A group of aspiring Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger dancers have joined together to learn and perform a Chinese Tango demonstration.  The Chinese Tango is a romantic, slow rhythm social dance that is popular in Asia, especially in Taiwan.  The performers are Ken Chin, Chery Chew, Marty Chew, Betty Gong, Lily Fong, King Fong, Beverly Jayne, Jimmy Kang, Moria Kang, and Phillip Wong.  Their instructor and coach, Diana Choy and Terry Chan spent countless hours working with them to perfect and polish the dance.

A reception will be co-hosted by the Foster City Arts and Culture Committee and the Foster City Chinese Club, which is in its 26th year.  Decorations will be provided by Man-U Imports.  Without having to go to China, Frank Jang of Man-U Imports will bring some of their treasures from China to Foster City from his 38,000 square feet showroom located in San Mateo.  Display pieces will include a traditional altar for Chinese New Year with gods of Happiness, Prosperity and Longevity, goddess of Mercy to name a few.  Also on display will be large dragon lacquer drums and dragon heads.

The city promotes and celebrates the diversity of ethnic backgrounds and cultures through various festivals and activities.  Past events have included sponsoring the International Festival, a float in the Chinese New Year Parade that won second prize for self-built float, and hosting the Northern California Dragon Boat races.  The dragon boat races are held at Leo Ryan Park and they are going into the fourth year where proceeds benefit Self Help for the Elderly.

Foster City welcomes the Year of the Dragon.  The dragon is the most revered creature among the dozen in the Chinese zodiac - decisive, strong, generous, romantic, brave.  There are five kinds of dragons.  This year is the golden one, and the 79th dragon since the Chinese started counting the years. The city hopes to bring health, prosperity and happiness to all those that live and work in Foster City, the home of the wind and water (feng shui)!
